美國喬治亞州奧古斯塔大學（Augusta University）實驗招募30名志願者，結果發現有22人自述至少食用過1種益生菌產品，且出現大腦混亂、注意力難以集中，還附帶有脹氣等不良反應。研究人員在患者小腸發現大量細菌繁殖，還有由於乳酸菌攝取過多產生的高濃度 D-乳酸，比未服用益生菌的人高出 2~3 倍。
