氣象局地震中心代理主任陳國昌指出，花蓮近海規模5.1地震，原因是菲律賓海板塊擠壓歐壓大陸板塊造成，該區域屬於地震活躍區域，凌晨3時30分左右已經發生規模4.6、4.3的地震，可算是前震，預計未來還有規模4左右的餘震，但都屬於正常地震活動，請民眾不必擔心。
