地震學家目前仍無法預測地震的確切發生時間。地震測報中心主任郭鎧紋強調，地震科學上是採觀測，而非預測，且地震預測須有嚴謹定義，包括震央、範圍大小和時間等。台大地質系教授陳宏宇表示，歐美及日本等國家學術單位都無法準確預測地震，民間預測更是不可考。
